Welcome to the official web site of the Northwest Chapter of the Arkansas Canoe Club

Our chapter covers the geographic region of Northwest Arkansas . Our corner of the state features some excellent paddling opportunities for whitewater, gentle moving streams, and lake recreation.

All year around, our members are on the water doing different things such as - day tripping in canoes and kayaks, canoe camping, fishing, playing boatball, teaching canoe, kayak and river safety and rescue, river cleanup, or just enjoying being on the water with friends.

In the spring and fall seasons, the Ozark Mountains provide some of the most reliable and exciting whitewater in the Midwest, with something for every paddler.

And that's what our club is all about - getting together with great people of all skill levels and interests who love to paddle the streams and lakes of the Ozarks! There are currently about 100 members in our area affiliated with the Northwest Chapter, and our monthy meetings and regularly scheduled events, such as pool practice sessions and Boatball, provide an opportunity to get to know and hang out with local paddlers.

You don't have to be a member to hang out with us (we're pretty easy going so meetings and events are open to everyone who wants to come), but we think it's a great idea to support the ACC by officially signing up.  Plus you get a sticker and some other cool stuff!

Signing up is easy - just Select Membership Menu on ACC Front Page follow the instructions to complete the application form and to submit payment. Be sure to circle "Northwest" for your chapter!.

We sincerely hope you enjoy our corner of the web! Thanks for coming!
See you in the eddy!
Ryan, Steve, and David

Monthly Chapter Meetings

November meeting will be after Thanksgiving, on Monday November 30, 6:30PM at
Jim's Razorback Pizza
2620 W 6th St
Fayetteville, AR 72701-7698
(479) 443-2265
Map and Directions

No regular meeting is scheduled in December, but there will be Saturday morning roll sessions Dec 12 and 19.

January we'll be back on regular schedule of last Monday at Jim's Razorback Pizza. Ryan will buy Pizza for everyone attending our new year kickoff.

The purpose of these meetings is to get together, shoot the bull, eat pizza and pasta, tell stories, give trip reports, watch videos, find someone to paddle with, and just generally have fun. It's also a chance for everyone to stay up to date on all club goings on. If the meeting day falls on a holiday or a major ACC event (such as Rendezvous or Canoe School), we may reschedule, so contact your friendly neighborhood chapter representatives if you want to be sure we're meeting.

All are welcome!!!

If you have ideas for a program we can do at a future monthly meeting, please contact us, let us know and we'll put it on the agenda. Videos, slideshows, guest speakers, mini-clinics, trip reports, trip plans, etc. - we'd love to have your ideas and we'd be happy to let you run the show if you want to.

. December 19, 8:30am to 11am

Boatball
Date/Time: During the season, we meet every Wednesday evening at 6:00 PM during the summer (roughly from May - September)
Where: Location varies and will be posted on the Arkansas Canoe Club Message Board. Please check there to see where we're playing or email a chapter officer and ask.
WINTER SCHEDULE: NO regularly scheduled boatball during the winter, but we may have occasional games on weekends. We will anounce these on the NW Chapter email list -contact the chapter president to join the list.
What's up: Boatball is a great paddling game that greatly improves fitness and paddling skills and is a lot of fun too! It's a little bit like a cross between soccer and basketball played with kayaks. For more information on the game, you can read this article that comes to us from Memphis where the game of Boatball was born. Check with the chapter officers to make sure the game is going this week!

News and Articles

September 09 meeting was a little smaller group than normal, could it be because word got out that Arthur was doing a program on Throw Rope Comparisons and Recommendations?. We also had several stories about recent paddling trips, trips planned for next couple of weeks, and some second time vistors searching for help learning how to handle new boats a little better.
We had a formal business session to update the Chapter Bylaws. Ryan noted that a quorum was present and a vote taken by show of hands. About 13 or 14 voted for approval and adoption of the 2009 By Laws, there were no votes against. All three chapter officers signed the document to verify the election and adoption.
By Laws of Northwest Chapter as adopted September 28, 2009.

August 09 meeting was our first at Jim's Razorback Pizza in Fayetteville was a good one. We had a room to ourselves that was the right size and right arrangement, about 35 people were there and filled the room. Steve and Tom lead a "show and tell" discussion of the variety of emergency kits that most of us carry in our boats. Ryan's creeking story illustrated the importance of each paddler carrying a few essentials for himself rather than relying on things that might be with another person or in another boat.
Ryan also talked about Rendezvous on Sept 19-20 and the new by-laws for NW Chapter. A vote to adopt the new by-laws is scheduled for our meeting September 28.

July 09 meeting was at Stephen Zisner's home in SW Fayettville. The executive cooks of the chapter feed us burgers, hot dogs, with all the fixings... except mayo! A thunderstorm set on top of the area and kept us inside instead of in the pool, but gave us more time for swapping stories and planning things. Thanks to Stephen for hosting.

Pizza Party a Success!
The NW Chapter elections were held May 18, 2009. Our fearless leader for the last four years, Bill "Fish" Herring has bailed out and moved to KC. Ryan Center was elected as Chapter President, Steve Runnels as VP, and David Dinan as Trea$uer.

Smith Creek Access Secured!
The Nature Conservancy recently acquired more than 1000 acres of land on Smith Creek, a beautiful tributary to the Buffalo River near Boxley. The hiking is spectacular, and when it rains hard the creek is a class III to V thrll ride! Wal Mart funded the majority of this land purchase, so hats off to everyone who helped protect this great little creek!
